What is needed in a LED lighting system?

Filed under:

To use some language borrowed from lighting designers, an LED lighting system would consist of an LED light source, ballast or driver, and a luminaire. The LED light source is either a high output LED or an array of LEDs, the driver is the circuitry necessary to power the light source safely with the necessary drive current, and the luminaire is the optics (reflectors and lenses) that direct the light where it is wanted. For LED lighting systems, thermal management will be an important function of the luminaire. Heat is the enemy of semiconductors, and protecting the junction from excessive heat is critical to maintenance of LED light sources.
